Tweet Making Good on Your New Year’s Resolve Don’t drop the ball on your New Year’s resolutions. This year, try some resolutions that are easy to keep and will protect you and your family well into next January and beyond. Don’t be a distracted driver – Many vehicle crashes are avoidable if you pay attention to the road. Inattentive driving accounted for nearly 6,000 crash fatalities and an estimated 515,000 injuries in police-reported crashes in 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. Distractions typically include talking, eating, grooming, attending to children, watching a video, reading, adjusting a navigation system and using a cell phone. Keep your home warm – The temperature in your house should be at least 65 degrees to prevent pipes from freezing. According to the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.), winter storms are the third-largest cause of catastrophe losses, resulting in about $1 billion in insured losses annually. The average water damage and freezing claim was $5,531 in 2007, the most recent year for which there are figures from ISO’s Property Claims Services. Protect your home – Each year billions of dollars are paid out in homeowners insurance claims, with residential theft averaging over $1,800 in losses [...]

Tweet Advanced Insurance Solutions of Hershey PA wants you and your family to be safe during the holidays. It is important to understand how to safety burn candles during the holiday season House-warming candles, left unmanaged, can lead to dangerous fires Candles are a great way to make a house feel like home, but if left unattended, they can have devastating effects. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, candles cause an estimated 15,600 fires in homes each year. Over half of those fires start because the candle is too close to combustible material and one in 10 are related to the homeowner falling asleep while the candle is lit. Thankfully, most candle-related fires can be prevented. Here’s what to know (courtesy of the U.S. Fire Administration): Avoid using lighted candles. If you do use candles, ensure they are in sturdy metal, glass, or ceramic holders and placed where they cannot be easily knocked down. Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets. Set a good example by using matches, lighters and fire carefully. Children should never be allowed to play with matches, lighters or candles. Never put candles on a Christmas tree. Never leave the house with candles [...]

Tweet I switched to Directv a few years ago. I liked it for a while. Over time I discovered my trees grew in the way of the dish and it needed to be moved. I also noticed during thunderstorms service was interrupted. Snow building up on the dish was not a problem as many told me it would be. One nice feature they offer for vacationers is the ability to suspend service. However, I recently called to have this done for the 6 weeks I would be out of town. After a long wait and two transfers I was told I needed to have a zero balance on my account. I pay my bills on time and have never been late. Since the check was in transit from my online bank account to the Directv they could not suspend my service until they received payment, which wasn’t even due for another 5 days. That means I have to call back and waste another half hour of my time on vacation to have the service suspended. PS you can only do this once in a 12 month period. I do believe I will be soon canceling my Directv and going back [...]

Tweet I’ve been sitting down here at the Outer Banks of North Carolina for nearly six weeks. It has been a great time. We started a new website called Everything Outer Banks. If you visit OBX you can now get your own personal blog for free. Use it as an itinerary, personal experiences, upload images and more. Copy and paste places you’d like to visit during your vacation and find local area businesses. It’s just that easy. Some are asking if we will do the same here in Pennsylvania. I’m not sure yet. If all goes well down here we just may do that.
